Functional Skills in English

Exam information
NOCN Functional Qualifications in English at Level 1 and Level 2 comprise of three separate summative assessments which focus on the three skill areas: Reading, Writing, Speaking, Listening and Communication.
All three components must be achieved in order to gain a full qualification.
Reading:
The Functional Skills Reading assesses the ability to red and understand different texts and to decode and understand written language and text from a range of real life contexts.
Writing:
The Functional Skills Writing assesses the ability to produce writing. 1 hour writing assessment comprises of two tasks. You may be asked to complete a range of activities from letter writing, email, forms or posters. You may use a dictionary during the assessment.
Speaking, Listening and Communication :
The Speaking, Listening and Communication assessment is 30 minutes in duration, this does not include preparation time. The discussion is 20 minutes, and presentation is 10 minutes.

Exam fees
This is a private examination and fees are payable for each component and for each attempt.
Exam fees must be paid before the registration.

All three components (Reading, Writing, Speaking, Listening and Conversation) can be booked at £200 only.

Collection/Delivery of Certificates
Exam certificates will be received by the school within a week after being marked. It usually takes up to 10 working days for NOCN to mark the exam.
We will notify candidates by email or telephone upon receipt.
We can post your certificate by recorded delivery at your request for an additional fee of £10. However, the school will bear no responsibility for the loss of a certificate in the post.
